The first step to implement your idea is to secure its protection as an intellectual property (IP).

The university provides a legal protection if the idea meets the concept of an object of industrial property rights (as usual it is a patentable invention or a technology to be licensed).

The following actions will take place in guidance of the specialists of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Group of the Research and Innovation Office.

Important:

To be patentable, an invention must be:

• new (what is described in the application must not be published before in any articles in Lithuania or abroad),
• industrially applicable;
• involve an inventive step (the invention is not obvious to specialists in the relevant field).

There is a PATLIB (Patent Library) Centre established in the university acting in collaboration with the Klaipėda Science and Technology Park and the State Patent Office. Through the intellectual property protection and commercialization activities, the University implements the „Third Mission" - to create opportunities and an environment for knowledge and technology transfer, to increase the university's competitiveness and attractiveness for business and society.

All the processes of IP management and commercialization are coordinated by the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Group of the Science and Innovation Office.

The processes are described in the Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization Rules of Klaipėda University (the current version submitted in June 2021). The Rules define the issues of the industrial IP created in the university: the ownership, its management, commercialization, sharing of financial obligations and benefits.

Commercialization of IP, technological innovation or R&DI (research, experimental development and innovation) in the university can be implemented via the following paths:

- Signing the contracts for R&DI services to business or public institutions;

- Licensing technological innovations - signing long-term license agreements;

- Establishing spin-off companies - on the basis of the university intellectual property and human recourses.
