Klaipeda University invites you to a special event where the real results of an initiative aimed at reducing food packaging and building a more sustainable future will be presented.

Over the past year, the canteen “KUB’o Svetainė” at the Klaipeda University campus has implemented an innovative solution: a reusable food packaging system that helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and contribute to climate change mitigation. We invite you to learn about the impact this solution has already made.

What will you learn during the event?

  • The real environmental impact of using reusable packaging.

  • The results achieved by Klaipeda University’s Living Lab at “KUB’o Svetainė”.

  • How circular economy principles work in practice.

  • The contribution such initiatives can make to reducing climate change.

The most active survey participants will also be awarded, followed by informal networking.

Registration. By registering, you will help us plan the catering responsibly and reduce food waste.

About the Initiative

In February 2025, a pilot initiative was launched at Klaipeda University, marking a practical step towards a more sustainable future. A small Living Laboratory was set up in the university's "KUB'o Svetainė" canteen (funded by the SBP 2021-2027 project Retail ReLooped: www.relooped.eu). The main goal of this project is to reduce single-use food packaging waste and promote responsible resource use in everyday activities.

The project focuses on providing practical solutions, such as reusable food packaging used for the daily catering of detainees at the Klaipeda City Police Department. These reusable containers are collected and cleaned in the canteen's industrial-grade dishwashing facility to ensure the highest standards of hygiene and safety. The Living Laboratory allows new solutions to be tested in real-life conditions and encourages visitors to consider their consumption habits and their environmental impact.

This initiative was the first practical step taken by Klaipeda University toward implementing the principles of the circular economy in institutional catering, by reducing the purchase of plastic packaging and, at the same time, decreasing plastic waste generation. The project contributes to a culture of responsible consumption by reducing food packaging waste and implementing sustainable solutions in the university environment. Furthermore, KU scientists calculated the contribution of such an initiative to climate change mitigation as well as its economic and social impact. Such consistent changes can have a long-term and meaningful impact on both the community and the environment.

The project is funded by the EU Regional Development Fund under the 2021-2027 Interreg VI-A South Baltic Cross-Border Cooperation Programme. For more information about the program, visit www.southbaltic.eu  and the project website: www.relooped.eu
